IGEL UD Pocket – Micro Universal Desktop Thin Client

IGEL’s new UD Pocket, a micro Universal Desktop Thin Client on a USB 3.0 thumb drive, allows you to turn a PC, laptop or any compatible x86, 64-bit CPU based endpoint device in a Thin Client, running the Linux based IGEL Universal Desktop operating system. The UD Pocket can be managed side by side with all the other Hard- and Software Thin Clients from Igel through the Universal Management Suite (UMS).

IGEL’s new UD Pocket, a micro Universal Desktop Thin Client on a USB 3.0 thumb drive, allows to turn a PC, laptop or any compatible x86, 64-bit CPU based endpoint device in a Thin Client, running the Linux based IGEL Universal Desktop operating system. The UD Pocket can be managed side by side with all the other Hard- and Software Thin Clients from IGEL through the Universal Management Suite (UMS).

No larger than a paper clip, UD Pocket provides the flexibility to boot from IGEL Universal Desktop or the local operating system. This is the big difference to the IGEL Universal Desktop Converter (UDC) which already exists for a long time in the Thin Client manufacturers product portfolio and is available in the third generation now. Both solutions, the UD Pocket and the Universal Desktop Converter, share the same code base and run the latest IGEL Linux 10, an Ubuntu based Linux operating system. While the Universal Desktop Converter solution replaces the existing OS on your endpoint, UD Pocket allows you to boot into the Thin Client OS from the thumb drive without touching your existing installation on the internal drives of your endpoint.

This non-intrusive design makes UD Pocket a perfect solution to give secure and fully managed access to corporate resources from personal BYOD, non-managed remote workstations or devices from external contractors and freelance workers.

The UD Pocket comes with a perpetual license assigned to each device with regular software updates. Other than with the Universal Desktop Converter, the license is bound to the thumb drive and roams with the device from endpoint to endpoint.

For the endpoint management of off-site devices IGEL will shortly have a solution with the release of a brand new Cloud Gateway solution. This new IGEL Cloud Gateway will be a simple and cost-effective alternative to today’s high priced VPN solutions, a simple and secure cloud-based gateway for companies with thousands of devices in remote office or branch locations. The official announcement is expected for the next days, so stay tuned…!
